Our trek began on Tuesday 20 August. Group 45 was a very small group of five guests. Everyone got along really well and quickly formed friendly relationships. Anna and Catherine are both from a military background and were super organised and helping the group wherever they could.
Wally and Curtis are mates from Melbourne and are both very outgoing. Curtis’ dad jokes and puns were like all dad jokes, just a little bit funny … Sorry Curtis, I’m guilty of this myself.
Anas only signed up for Kokoda 4 days before the trip, which has got to be some sort of record. He was already in PNG and up at Mt Hagan and flew to Port Moresby Monday afternoon. Unfortunately his bag didn’t make the same trip so Big Jack went into action, organising a sleeping bag and backpack from the compound, advising on where to shop in Popondetta and then liaising with the airline to get Anas’ bag back. He got the bag back and had it waiting at the Holiday Inn on our return!
Anna and Catherine went into overdrive at Popondetta and were picking out clothes for Anas. The shirt they chose for Anas to wear in camp was quite the fashion piece that can be best described as ‘peacock green’.
The weather gods were good to us and the track was dry up until the last day. This pleased Wally as he was hoping for some experience in the rain and mud and he wasn’t disappointed.
Everyone had a good time and successfully completed the trip. Cutis was adamant he isn’t going to do Kokoda a second time so keep and eye out on Gumtree for hiking equipment being sold.
Well done everyone. It was certainly my great pleasure to take you on this journey and I hope to see you all again in the future.
