The No Roads - Health May 2019 XPD had it’s share of logistical challenges but thanks to good planning, great back up from Fiona at the office and a great spirit of adventure by our team we were able to arrive at our 1st clinic at Tumari Bay only 30 mins behind schedule. Jo was able to secure a stock of medications from the Area Medical Store in Port Moresby which meant that we were able to provide a great outreach service to the villages.
Local health staff and our village health volunteers were once again super supportive and keen to learn from an amazing team of seasoned trekking clinicians and 5 new members to our growing NR-Health family. We were delighted to meet up a 3rd time with a young child we had seen on our last 2 medical expeditions and the success of the intervention by Dr Barry in particular was in his words "a miracle" ( see Dr Barry's interview on facebook). There must be something in the water in Tufi as midwives Fiona, Lizzie, Annie and Jen were kept busy with many prenatal checks which also provided great learning opportunities for our village birth assistants.
Our nurses from remote NT - Rachael and Bree - were born to work in this environment and 3rd time NR-H nurse Cheryl was a true workhorse and always happy to see the just one last patient who kept arriving. My job was made super easy by having 2 great logistical brothers (Dave and fellow NR Foundation board member Hadyn) on board who managed our pharmacy and were with me in the middle of the night when tarps had to be put up when the weather turned on us.
We concluded the trip with the opening of the Volunteer Health Worker House which we built to enable those from outlying villages to stay in Tufi and work to develop their skills. To Brian & Roya at the Tufi Resort - thanks again for your amazing support and the reliability and flexibility that you provide with meals and our major form of transport - dive boats.
This is a big year for No Roads - Health and Tufi with 3 expeditions and I look forward to heading back to Tufi in just over 2 months to continue to build the capacity of these communities to look after themselves. More info on these expeditions here: No Roads Health
