Monday 4th of September and four keen trekkers plus our support team of twelve set foot on the Kokoda Plateau for the adventure of a lifetime, and what a great group they were!
Two pairs of mates who were tackling the trail together. Jim and Cam from Perth and Melbourne and Christian and Craig from the Latrobe valley. As a group they sure did demonstrate the qualities of Courage, Endurance, Mateship and Sacrifice. As a result of these trekkers naturally displaying the qualities of Kokoda, come Tuesday the 12th they all crossed the finish line at Owers' Corner, proudly walking under the arches!
A beautiful sunny day had us meeting our support crew in Kokoda, the guys who were determined to get us all safely through this adventure when things got tough!
Although we dodged the rain when trekking, rain from the previous week along with a few groups of trekkers made the track on the Northern side of Bellamy very muddy. For day three we had to slog through ankle deep orange ooze that tried to hold onto your shoes and zapped your energy it was a tough few days and i think everyone had their moment where they asked “what have I got myself in for” but persistence and determination had us get over Mt Bellamy and the Southern side was relatively dry and that made for easier trekking.

This trek coincided with the 75th anniversary of the battle of Brigade hill and we were all honoured to be on the day and hour that the battle kicked off it sure gave the history some real depth. With a bit of extra time available to us at Brigade hill we went searching for pits off the beaten track that trekkers seldom get to see. We found a few and had an almighty adventure but most of all gained an appreciation for what the Japanese attackers faced just getting to the Australian positions 75 years before.
The second half of the trek was completed with dry and hot conditions. The dry making things easier than the first half of the trek but the heat took its toll and made the trek challenging. Come Tuesday the 12th of September four great blokes did the final push through the Kunai grass up the last hill into Owers' corner. Well done and an excellent effort from everyone.
