September Trek Report – AJ’s #25 Trek
Kokoda in September aaaaah, nothing better!! Especially with a small group watching all the other mammoth groups around battle for toilets, seats, crossings, etc etc. Have I mentioned I’m not impressed with large groups????
So we crack on with father/daughter David & Emma, father/son Paul & Kyle, Besties, Karen & Olivia and that other bloke, the Kiwi guy, all alone as Kiwis usually find themselves, good ol’ John! Actually, it’s always great to have a Kiwi (4th for me), lots of fun, lots of sass and just a real reminder of what ANZAC is all about.
We travelled well and fast, the track was relatively dry with just enough rain/mud to bring it home. Rivers down, crossings easy, swimming good, and plenty of water bar the usual villages with their intermittent supply. Again, September, so good.
What’s also really nice is quite a few personal porters, which makes interaction so much quicker and easier, a porter team of 20 gents who just get in and get the job done to consistently high standards. They really are the highlight of the trek.

- Emma’s ability to tell David exactly where his numerous missing items of food or clothing were
- The stories and more stories from Kyle & Paul as they traverse the country drilling, dredging, hunting, skiing, 4wd, you name, only Mick Dundee has done more adventuring (but not that much more)
- Karen & Libby soldiering on through, especially Lib the ‘pocket rocket’ who NEVER stops at home and NEVER stopped across the track.
- And the Kiwi. Always happy to take it in large amounts and dish it back in even larger amounts.
- Street lights in the villages ?? Still unsure about that one but the main thing is the locals are pretty happy about them
- 75th Anniversary – always great to be there on significant anniversaries, just seems to bring it closer to home
- Dinner with the men at the Holiday Inn, always in awe at the appetites, the singing, the laughs and the sincerity of being privileged to hand out awards and mementoes
