2015 April - Kokoda Trek Report - Tom Allwright

WOW!!! What an effort for this group of 14 inspirational trekkers. They faced everything they had imagined in their minds, plus more. In what was easily the muddiest trek I have crossed as a guide, these guys certainly got what they paid for.

The previous three months had been spent in gyms, ProSport Health & Fitness, going up and down hills in the outskirts of Melbourne and many a latte at the local cafes amongst other things. We arrived in PNG in the glorious sun, heat and humidity, that’s not what my iphone weather map was saying, but we would take it regardless.

Having lead eight trips, I knew each trip was getting closer to a treacherous one, one where it doesn’t stop raining, the mud was so dense that walking was a struggle and one where the spirits of the group go up and down like a roller coaster, I think this was it.

People who have been before would be aware of the aggressive decent in to the flagship town of Kagi. For those who haven’t, it proves difficult to stay upright on a dry day. In some weird way, this was day where the treacherous rain and slippery red clay boosted the spirits of all. Amongst the mud, we were collecting an overwhelming amount of banter, which would then relate to being fined for each fall. The client of the day went to Andy, who managed to lose his footing a total of 12 times, in the space of 2 hours, pretty impressive.  While pleasure is found from someone else’s discomfort, a sense of happiness, accomplishment and achievement is also found from another’s fortunes, as we trekked through and in to each village.

Every trekker will tell you a different story about Kokoda, and this was no different. Kokoda is an amazing place and if the trees, river or rocks could talk, I wonder what they’d say or what they’d seen. ProSport Health & Fitness and No Roads Expeditions continue their great relationship over the Kokoda Track and keep our 100% record in tac. Congratulations to everyone who was part of this immensely special trip, the Centenary of the Anzacs.
